Grammaw’s big adventure

Posted in TR '07 on August 19th, 2007

Woo hoo! We did it – me and anthony conquered the transrockies! Anthony – now known as quadzilla – on a single speed and me on a fully geared. Day 6 was definitely the hardest mentally, but we pulled it off. I heard people say that race organizers called it the most grueling stage in all of the years to date. And guess what – I learned how to really ride downhill. The alternative was anthony duct taping me to my bike and pushing me over the edge! For my ghoulish clients – injuries weren’t too bad. A few scrapes and bruises, one endo, one classic ‘drive over top of another cyclist at 40kph to land on. my head, and two separate incidents of bruised ribs. Overall, it was an amazing 7 days and I want to say thanks to misfit pete for giving me the opportunity to meet and ride with such an awesome group of guys – especially anthony, who really developed a sense of patience! Thanks hammy – good on you!

To my friends – glad you believed I could do it, cuz I sure had my doubts.

A few highlights:
- found out who mark lepper was
- met so many incredible people
- the optimistic attitide of michael (crash) who inspired me and who never gave up
- the mountains
- crossing the finish line in Fernie

And I know I’ve said before (right tone?), but what the hell was I thinking . . .

Anthony

Time to celebrate a great accomplishment hats off to the rest of the team for a job well done and especially Peter for the late nights and the organizing to get the shirts, frames designed and ordered as well as assembling; fixing and ordering all of the parts to get the bikes working top notch!!! As a matter of fact none of us had a mechanical other than Michael with a pinch flat, simply amazing!!! However its not a surprise because we do have a world superstar riding with us (Mark Lepper – he is demanding!!) by the way has anyone seen him???

Kudos – Peter

I owe my wife a big thanks when I got to my hotel room she had pre-arranged two of my favorites Corona’s and M&M’s. What a way to end the week! Thanks Babe!!

I am told I should tell the tale of the Purple German. He was the Fuhrer of Food. The Kaiser of Caterers.. You want more? No! Well, on my drive from Whiteswan to Elkford (Stage 4? I started losing track), I stopped for some much needed relaxation – and a break from the boys. There was a lovely natural hotspring going into the glacier-fed river in a. series of pools. I relaxed into the hottest ones. I opened my eyes to discover… what? You guessed it! The meister of meals and his crew. However, they clearly came unprepared for a holiday in the hotsprings. What were they wearing, you might wonder? Yes, they were in their undies (thank god there was a good Canadian sign forbidding nudity). AND. The Purple German had WHITE underwear(can you say wet T shirt contest?). Also he had evidently been spending a LOT of time in the sun. With no tan lines! (Ahem) Anyway, when I got back to camp (took quite a while due to an overturned logging truck), there he was. Turns out he DID have a bathing suit. A speedo. His sunburn had turned him purple. And, Anthony noticed he had a dickydo. From that point on, he became the Purple German.
