Tee Minus

Within an hour of yesterdays post, Stan's NoTubes answered. Introductions made, digits exchanged, words spoken, questions asked and heads scratched. Stan-service was most knowledgable, predictably, but they also proved  excellent in the art of (re)direction.  Repeatedly and oft (re)focusing my stabby wit back and unto the more relevant Stan-facts of note. This epic Corporate summit ultimately culminated in decisions being decided and declarations being declared. Mere hours thereafter, ...

Starving Artist Recipe Book

The BRECK EPIC is coming. Looming. Threatening. An impenetrable fiscal fog, blackening the heart of mine August and spewing loss well into the fall. To the most and unknowing, participation is entirely voluntary. To the rest, it is anything but. The Breck Epic is absolutely ineludible. Like so much of a necessary evil. Like crime(s) committed in the interest of some good. Or. Like Valentines Day. Damned if you ...

Momentum Building

The Breck Epic is less than a ways away. Riding, to some extent, has been done. And it's worthy of note as well, I've enjoyed it. Immensely. Finally. Effectively, however, what's done is done. As it pertains to preparation. For me, travel takes over come this July. So, what's left (pre-Epic) will and shall be considered TAPER*. * Look it up, all the pro's do it. It shall be a great ...

Brecking 101

Stage Racing. Some do.  Some don't. Those that do, do and that's that I suppose. Those that do not, have their reasons. Reasons, most likely, that are a one of just two; they don't want to they don't think they can. To the former, sure. To the latter, you're (probably*) wrong. * In the event that you were not wrong, that I was wrong...and you are now dead...sincere apologies. ...

Man Love and other Breck Thoughts

The 2012 edition of the BRECK EPIC will be a go in some and so 60 days. For you, there can only be three possible responses; You have entered. You have not entered, you will be doing so, you are just slow. You have not entered, you will not be doing so, you are a pussy. Certainly, if you have entered, you probably and already know that you  aren't number ONE. Because ...

Breck Stage SIX

Last (BRECK) day. The other day. For Stage SIX of the BRECK EPIC there was miles and there were feet. Distance and vertical I'm told. Surely to hold trials, tribulations controlled by a medieval system of measure. Updates of a (more) timely fashion, while obviously more appropriate, would not have reflected the intense (and debilitating) nature of STAGE SEVEN. Five days the previous, the hangover is now subsiding. Suffice to ...

Breck Stage FIVE

Stage FIVE. 40 miles.  7somethingthousand' of climbing. Wheeler complete. Repairs held. Legs held even more so. Although they needed to be reminded regularly that it was in fact a 'bicycle' race and not a 'Hey fuckwits, what say we grab our bikes and walk around the backcountry for six days and see how much we can puke at altitude' race. So I rode more than in past days. Sometimes quickly. Mostly ...

Breck Stage THREE

Day Three. There was no death. That doesn't mean I wasn't willing it on no less than two corporations. The steak knife corrections to the Easton free-hub held (at around 75%) for 20 miles. After which the hub was unable to withstand the whispy madness imposed by this monster engine on anything above 8 degrees. Bullshit really. My legs were okay with this. Modifications made to E13/HIVE/WHATEVER cranks held for 15 miles. ...

Breck Stage TWO

Stage ONE provided a major kick to my general preparedness. Stage TWO was only marginally longer (2 miles or 30 km). Stage TWO offered 50% more vertical (at 7300'). I could wax for some time about how this feels. But. None of this matters. Above all. The hub stunked. The cranks crunked. Something had to be done. Hub rework took place between beers the night prior and utilized our ample shop inventory. Steak ...

Breck Stage ONE

Year to date single track mileage. Successfully doubled. Year to date cycling vertical. Successfully tripled. Body summary: Road legs - Good. Climbing legs (low-moderate) - Adequate. Climbing legs (moderate-steep) - Non Existant. Endurance - Adequate. Recovery - Poor. Giving a fuck - NOT A ONE. Remainder: Bike(s) held fantastically. The Manitou TOWER Pro was the right thing, this time. The Gates BELT Drive ALC isn't the world biggest piece ...

Last of Breck Business

Ten reasons why New Peter is going to kick the living fuck out of the BRECK EPIC 2011. New Peter did not get working wheels. I say this without an ounce of surprise.  New Peter needs not one-thing that actually works. New Peter is broke and financially pathetic. There will be no Porsche.  No stripper powered massages.  No cocaine sandwiches and no 100$ bill tire patches.  A budget limited to petty theft ...

Breck Business…

My NEW Easton XC ONE wheels are toast...pop. Surprise! And, despite itself, the belt drive continues to hold. The only thing I do NEED before soon, is a set of (matching only please) wheels that I can run with the belt drive. To borrow. And use. At The Breck Epic. Then return. Light, durable and available are the only three musts. And by durable.  I mean, they aren't shit. ...

Accommodations in Breck

The great and powerful DICKY and I are looking for roommates to share condo-esque accommodations in Breckenridge for the Breck Epic. It won't be awkward or sexual. Unless it is. Then we aren't drunk enough. CONTACT if you're around. Dicky says; Unserious racers only need apply.

Breck Less Preparedness

Acceptance. A vital and integral component of calculated (thereby dignified) failure. There is only honour in failure at the hands of defeat. Honour is pride and pride is a sin by Jesus. At exactly 06:30 this morning I pulled my plug, with it, all intention of (any) serious cycling in 2011. The alarm was extinguished with the sound of thunder on rain. Immediately and with authority.  I decided. I will not be ...

Ship Shape

Broke and broken is not the place for me. I've tried both, together, individually, individually together. I've done this on occasion as well as on numerous occasions. Like failure and amphetamines, these are experiences every soul should sample. Only then, face down in your proverbial ditch, might you fully understand. Neither offers the romance and freedom we are entitled to assume in the complacency that causes them. That was my ...
